Verbs in the future tense
In Norwegian we use skal and kommer til a to talk about the future. Here you learn how to use them correctly.
Two ways to talk about the future
Norwegian does not have a separate future tense. Instead we use auxiliary verbs.
1. Skal + infinitive — planned action
- Jeg skal reise til Bergen i morgen — I am going to travel to Bergen tomorrow
- Hun skal begynne på skolen i august — She is going to start school in August
2. Kommer til å + infinitive — expected event
- Det kommer til å regne i morgen — It is going to rain tomorrow
- Han kommer til å bli lege — He is going to become a doctor
Conjugation of skal
- jeg skal — I will
- du skal — you will
- han/hun/det skal — he/she/it will
- vi skal — we will
- dere skal — you will (plural)
- de skal — they will
