Two ways to talk about the future

Norwegian does not have a separate future tense. Instead we use auxiliary verbs.

1. Skal + infinitive — planned action

  • Jeg skal reise til Bergen i morgen — I am going to travel to Bergen tomorrow
  • Hun skal begynne på skolen i august — She is going to start school in August

2. Kommer til å + infinitive — expected event

  • Det kommer til å regne i morgen — It is going to rain tomorrow
  • Han kommer til å bli lege — He is going to become a doctor

Conjugation of skal

  • jeg skal — I will
  • du skal — you will
  • han/hun/det skal — he/she/it will
  • vi skal — we will
  • dere skal — you will (plural)
  • de skal — they will
